We also follow that protocol. However, we do have Dr.s that order bilateral
study when the pt. is only complaining of symptoms in one leg. We never
question the dr.s on these, we just do it. And I have to say I have found a
few DVTs in the opposite leg also. I think some dr.s don't really understand
DVTs that is why they order bilateral studies because blood clots scare them
and they want to be sure the pt. doesn't have one. I mean how many times
have you told a GP or another dr. that the pt has a thrombus in their
superficial vein such as GSV or LSV and they ask you if that is a DVT. I think
ppl and dr.s need to be educated on DVTs and arterial studies for that matter.
I do questions dr.'s orders but not usually on venous studies.
