This afternoon, at about 5:30, I watched and waited in the field in Charlotte
just along Lake Rd. from the intersection of Lake and Greenbush Roads.
Around the somewhat wet mud in the middle, there were at first only a number of
killdeers and a Pectoral Sandpiper. Then, many killdeer and things came in,
and there was a general disruption, with many birds wheeling and calling. When
the birds settled, I counted
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER - 1
American Golden-Plover - 2
Pectoral Sandpiper - 2
Killdeer - 19
Horned Lark - 1
Ted Murin, who watched at Charlotte Town Beach before this period, tells me
that the Buff-breasted had actually foraged with a flock of killdeers on the
stony, projecting area just to the left of the point of observation. It was
startled there, and evidently this was what caused it to fly back to the muddy
field.
I scanned Shelburne Bay quickly at around 4:30. The results were
Green Heron - 1
Great Blue Heron - 2
Belted Kingfisher - 2
Killdeer - 15
Ring-billed Gull - X
Mallard - X
Wood Duck - 1
Canada Goose - X
Turkey Vulture - 2
