Improving the world—New York’s Yurintzy Estrada teams with EWB-USA
Reprinted from DMJM Harris Newsletter - August
Growing up, Yurintzy Estrada had always wanted a career where she
could help develop communities worldwide through design and
construction. In addition to her work as a structural engineer with
DMJM Harris, Estrada has found another means to contribute through
Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA), a nonprofit organization that
partners with developing international communities to improve the
quality of life.
“I first heard about EWB from a City College of New York (CCNY)
alumnus during my junior year,” says Estrada. “It was the
perfect organization for me—someplace where I could make a
difference.”
“We showed the community members how to maintain, repair and
manage the water system though workshops and small meetings,”
explains Estrada. “The CCNY team is still involved with the
Honduras community and will plan a post implementation trip to ensure
that the system is being maintained correctly.” (see next column
for rest of story)

Dear Members and Friends,
Temperatures are still hitting 80 degrees out here in Colorado, but
as I look ahead to a full slate of exciting and engaging Fall
Workshops, summer seems like a dim memory. I hope to meet and talk
with at least a few of you as I make my way around the country. For
those of you unable to attend a workshop, here are a few of the
exciting things we have happening at headquarters:
Welcome to Gina Earles, the new EWB-USA Managing Director! Gina
comes to us with a strong background in marketing, fundraising and
management in both the non-profit and for-profit business worlds. She
will be overseeing chapter management, communications, public
relations, development activities and financial planning at EWB-USA.
We are delighted that William Gates, Sr., the father of Microsoft
founder Bill Gates, Jr., has accepted our invitation to speak at the
Annual International Conference in Seattle in March 2008. Bill Sr. is
a renowned philanthropist and speaker, co-chair of the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation, and the co-author of Wealth and Our
Commonwealth. Registration for the 2008 Conference will begin online
on October 15 – don’t delay!
American Society of Civil Engineers has generously partnered with us
to increase membership by including EWB-USA registration or renewals
in their annual membership drive. We are looking forward to new areas
of collaboration with ASCE and other professional associations.
E&O Insurance has been contracted to provide Errors and Omissions
Insurance to all our Professional Members through Lloyds of London.
We want your Inspirational Stories! Please send us your
heartwarming, inspiring or transformational story involving your work
with EWB-USA, so we can share them with donors, supporters, and
partners. Stories should be 300 words or less and can be sent to Zoe

$50 gift certificate to the EWB-USA store (new items coming soon!).

Put your engineering skills to solve one of our nation’s most
pressing problems!
There is an urgent need for excellent science and math education in
our nation and yet our public schools, especially those in low-income
communities, are failing to adequately prepare their students in
science and math. Teach For America is seeking entrepreneurial,
solutions-oriented engineering majors to help us address this alarming
problem. To learn how you can join the network of emerging leaders to
make a difference, and to read about our relationships with employers
and graduate programs, visit www.teachforamerica.org.

At the time, EWB-USA was still a fairly new organization and Estrada
helped form the CCNY student chapter. As the CCNY student
chapter’s first project leader, Estrada managed thedesign of a
water system for a Honduran community, which was completed January 2007.
The design involved three main technical components (a water
collection system, a distribution system, and a chlorination system)
and two sustainability and environmental components (wastewater
management and garbage disposal methods for the community).
