I was astounded to see not 1, not 2, but THREE Ruffed Grouse in our yard
in Moretown this morning. All were enjoying the sweet nectar of wild
grapes, literally swinging on the vines, at the edge of the woods! All 3
were gray and after about 10 minutes, our entertainment as we ate
breakfast with bins in hand, flew deeper into the trees!
Until today, my best look at RG was from the rear as they flushed from
their cover, or flying across my path as I walked in the woods. A great
way to start the day! We are daily treated to what appears to be a
family of 4 Pileateds who also love the grape! We usually see one or
two at a time, but have seen 3 or 4 together in the early morning.
