I recommend that you have a phone conversation with the Rotary person
who emailed you. Conversations about money feel strange, but they did
say they want to help. The point of your conversation would be to find
out if they mean "in kind" help, e.g. advice from their own people who
happen to be in useful professions or "stuff" that the project could
use that happens to be a product that some Rotary member makes or
sells; OR funding, i.e. money. If the latter, you can be bold enough
to ask what sort of contributions they have been able to make to past
projects like this one. Once you find that out and vigorously express
your thanks, the group can huddle and prepare a short proposal to
Rotary. Others know much more about fundraising than I but I've found
that sponsors like to be responsible for a specific part of a project
-- something a gratitude plaque can be posted on, figuratively or
literally. "Refractory Bricks thanks to Rotary International" or
"Boiler and Chimney by Rotary" -- kind of like the decals on a NASCAR
race car. Or if a particular trip needs to financed for the project,
maybe they'd be interested in coverering that. The point is ask for
funding for something specific and tangable, not just a sum of money
for operating expenses.
