I had a fun day of bird watching at the southern end of Lake Bomoseen this morning,
   
  1 Wood Duck
  12 Mallard
  3 Hooded Merganser
  2 Common Merganser
  about 30 Common Goldeye
  about 40 bufflehead
  5 scaup (lesser, I think)
  195 Canada Goose
  what I think was a Ruddy Duck
  1 Common Loon, nonbreeding plumage
  1 Osprey
  1 Red-tailed Hawk
  7 Eastern Bluebird
  1 Belted Kingfisher
  5+ Black-capped Chickadee
  1 American Goldfinch
  2 Blue Jay
   
   
  Is is strang for mallards to be diving in the water?  I saw a group of them hanging out  in a circle and going completely under, a few at a time.  It reminded me of what some call loon socialization behavior.
