Some pre-class birding proved to be very successful this morning
between 8:30 and 10:00. First, following up on Scott Morrical's
reports of Pine Grosbeaks, Autumn Amici and I went to Deerfield Rd in
S. Burlington where we saw the following species:
Pine Grosbeak (75-100, as Scott estimated, seems reasonable)
Common Redpoll (Maybe 20 or so)
Bohemian Waxwings (at least 5 mixed in with many Cedars)
Then, following up on Jim Osborn's e-mail about a Harlequin Duck, we
decided to drive out to Shelburne, where we saw:
Double-crested Cormorant (flew from the shore as we drove past Shelburne Bay)
Barred Owl (perched along side Harbor Rd)
Rough-legged Hawk
Accepiter sp. (A brief look, but I think Cooper's)
Horned Grebe
Common Goldeneye
Red-breasted Merganser
Bufflehead
Harlequin Duck (mixed in with the goldeneye and Bufflehead)
White-winged Scoter (one also with the goldeneye and bufflehead)
Great Blue Heron (Flew over Harbor Rd as driving back)
