The Saxtons River CBC was held yesterday. 58 species were recorded. Highlights were:
***RED-SHOULDERED X RED-TAILED HAWK HYBRID*** This will most likely
present the first ever documented record for any CBC in North America!!!! This bird has been present for the past year in a neighborhood in Westminster. Julie Waters and Cyndi Miller first discovered this bird about a year ago. The bird has been well documented with photos and audio. Most top birders (including David Sibley) agree with the conclusion that the raptor is indeed a Red-shouldered X Red-tailed hybrid. Congratulations Julie and Cyndi for originally finding and documenting it and then getting it for count day on our CBC!!
Other highlights included:
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker --4
Hermit Thush --1
American Pipit --2
Bohemian Waxwing --2
Swamp Sparrow --1
Lapland Longspur --3
Red-winged Blackbird --3
Pine grosbeaks, Northern Shrikes, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers were all present in larger than normal numbers as well.
