EGU General Assembly 2008, Vienna - abstract deadline Jan 14
Dear Colleagues,
We welcome all abstracts involving field and laboratory studies,
applications and problems using sclerochronology and high-resolution
geochemistry in various carbonate skeletons (e.g., corals, molluscs,
brachiopods, otoliths) to contribute to this exciting field of research.
Please submit abstracts to this session for the annual meeting of EGU in
2008 in the beautiful city of Vienna (Austria). This is a Stratigraphy,
Sedimentology and Palaeontology session (SSP12). Go to
http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2008/index.html for the most recent
program listing and the abstract submission tool.
Deadline for abstract submission is January, 14 2008.
Session title: Sclerochronology: A powerful tool for environmental
reconstruction (SSP12)
Conveners: Dorothee Hippler, David P Gillikin, Bernd Schöne
Session description:
The study of the physical and chemical variations in accretionary hard
parts of marine and terrestrial organisms, and the temporal context in
which they formed (sclerochronology) has become a promising tool for
reconstructing environmental change on both geological and
archaeological time scales. Growth pattern analysis (e.g. using physical
or chemical patterns in annual growth rings) aims at reconstructing the
life history traits of the organisms, as well as for providing
high-resolution records of environmental and climatic change through
space and time. However, these records are often complicated by vital
effects, which can only be accounted for when we have a mechanistic
understanding of proxy incorporation. We welcome all contributions,
including both field and laboratory studies, using sclerochronology
and/or high-resolution geochemistry in biogenic carbonates, such as
corals, molluscs, brachiopods, otoliths, etc, that contribute to
progress in this research area.
Please feel free to forward this email to students and/or colleagues who
might be interested.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for additional information.
We look forward to seeing you in Vienna.
Cheers,
David, Dorothee and Bernd
