A friend reports the presence of 2 Ruffed Grouse in his yd. On a couple of occassions he has seen one bird, male?, up on a log furiously flapping (his) wings. Is this fellow practicing, or do grouse really start mating activity this early?

Northern Shrike seen on Sun, Jan 13 in E. Dorset.

Aside from a brief fly-in and fly-out of 21 Redpoles at my feeder on the 15th, there has been very little feeding activity.
