For the past four or five years I have had some success with a reticulation
system for providing year round water for the birds and other thirsty
critters.
It comprises a 20 inch diameter plant saucer, (kind of rubbery plastic), a
5-6 gallon old vacuum canister, a fish tank pump, a bucket heater and about 6
feet of one quarter inch plastic tubing.
The bird bath sits on top of an old pine stump about two feet above the
reservoir.
Drill the "in" and "out" holes for the plastic tubing near the top of the
rim.
During the winter some insulation may be wrapped around the canister.
To prevent blockage on the "out" there is a 3 inch diameter cylinder of
screening standing vertically and topped off.
The set up has worked throughout the winters provided the water supply is
maintained. I keep the cannister covered.
