I had hordes of them up until a couple weeks ago, now only a
handful. I sort of assumed they got tired of competing with the
increasing numbers of Redpolls here, now up to 75 or 80.
Last year, my several dozen resident Goldfinches vanished
overnight in mid-fall, and were replaced about a month later by
several dozen (I'm guessing new ones), who stayed the winter.
This year if the residents left and were replaced by others, the
transition was seamless, with no Goldfinch-less period until now.
