Sorry for the late report; but in case anyone is headed to Moose Bog; there
were several birders there last weekend.
There were 6 birders there Sunday, in 3 groups, when I was there, on a
perfect day. We had good looks at BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along S. America
Pond Rd (at least two different birds seen), as well as Hairy Woodpecker
and Pileated Woodpecker (in the distance). A Hairy was seen by Heidi Rich
to be extensively flaking the trees in last year's spot for the three-toed.
We also got good looks at BOREAL CHICKADEE along the road. Extended looking
for the Three-Toed was in vain.
We saw several GRAY JAYS, as many as I have ever seen there (one group of
5), in different spots in the general area.
Also, I understand on last Saturday that there were again at least 3 groups
of birders there, when the weather was nice; but also again no three-toed
was seen.
On the way back through Island Pond's "downtown" housing area, we were
surprised to see two RUFFED GROUSE feeding in a tree, not far from the
road; and they stayed there as Jim Mead conversed with the owners of the
property just below them. We understand from the owners that they are
habitually in that area.
Good birding this holiday weekend,
