Hi - Our female ruffed grouse visits weekly near our feeders and sometimes more often.
Not sure about drumming/courting this early, but our ruffed grouse typical begin this behavior in mid-to-late February or the first week of March.? Their behavior, as I understand it, depends on light -- not weather.?
Last year in March, a female near the house being chased in courtship broke two panes in a triple pane window.? Fortunately, she was stunned but not killed.?

A friend reports the presence of 2 Ruffed Grouse in his yd. On a couple of
occassions he has seen one bird, male?, up on a log furiously flapping (his)
wings. Is this fellow practicing, or do grouse really start mating activity
Northern Shrike seen on Sun, Jan 13 in E. Dorset.
Aside from a brief fly-in and fly-out of 21 Redpoles at my feeder on the 15th,
there has been very little feeding activity.
