The Center for Research on Vermont is cosponsoring the event "Buffalo
Soldier Contributions, 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiment," which will be
presented by author and historian Frank Schubert on Wednesday, February
27, 2008. The free, public event will be held at the University of
Vermont from 6:30 to 8 pm, in the Sugar Maple Room, 400 Davis Center.
From 1909 until 1913, the 10th Cavalry Regiment made up of
African-American enlisted men and white officers, was stationed at Fort
Ethan Allen in Colchester, Vt. The 10th was one of four regiments made
up of African-American soldiers known as "buffalo soldiers."
A flier for the event is attached. You may also download it at
<http://www.uvm.edu/~vtbufalo>.
In conjunction with the event, UVM Special Collections and descendants
of some of the Buffalo Soldiers who remained in the area are sponsoring
an exhibit from February 4 through March 7, on the main floor of
Bailey/Howe Library. On display are panels telling the history of the
10th Cavalry prior to coming to Fort Ethan Allen, their time here, and
where they went when they left. Many of the photographs and personal
items are on display for the first time. For more information about the
exhibit, please contact Special Collections at 802-656-2138.
Also, anyone who missed the Vermont Public Radio (VPR) program on
1/21/08, about African American experiences in Vermont, specifically, an
interview with Dr. Schubert about African American soldiers in Vermont,
may visit the VPR Web site at <http://vpr.net/episode/42808/> to listen
to the broadcast.
