The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project (www.nesfp.org) is a program
dedicated to working with beginning farmers, including immigrants,
refugees, and US born citizens through training, technical assistance,
land access, and assistance with marketing their products direct to
consumers and building a sustainable food system. It's a great place to
work with a diverse clientele and an energetic staff! We are looking
for a CSA Coordinator to manage all aspects of our multi-farmer CSA
program, distributing ethnic and mainstream produce to over a hundred
families in the Greater Lowell and Boston areas.
*The CSA Coordinator will manage the World PEAS (_P_eople _E_nhancing
_A_gricultural _S_ustainability) CSA and will work closely with the
Technical Assistance Coordinator others on the NESFP team to coordinate
crop production, distribution, and delivery to over 100 shareholders.
This position will report to the NESFP Director and offers an
opportunity to gain valuable experience, work with a diverse group of
immigrant, refugee, and other mainstream farmers in a well-established,
growing organization, and play a key role in building the market for
local food and sustainable farming.
* *Manage Farmer CSA Production and Post-Production Operations*:
Coordinate and communicate with farmers relative to meetings,
production, crop diversity, contribution, post harvest procedures
and weekly meetings. Ensure organic production practices and
appropriate food safety measures by providing hands on
post-harvest and food safety training for CSA farmers.
Coordinate and communicate farmer production issues with Technical
Assistance Coordinator and Farm Site Manager.
* *Manage CSA Distribution Operations and service 100 CSA
Shareholders*. Ensure appropriate production delivery. Coordinate
cooler use, sales of extra produce and educational farm tours.
Manage CSA Pick-Your-Own flower and herb garden. Prepare weekly
* *Manage CSA Volunteers*. Organize “meet and greet” before farming
season begins & solicit volunteers. Retain active volunteers to
assist with CSA packing and distribution by providing good
communication, training and supervision.
* *Coordinate CSA administrative and record keeping functions*.
Maintain payment deadlines & update spreadsheets. Assist farmers
with invoice creation. Track weekly share values and adjust volume
and selection. Maintain database of farm contributions for
posting to the payment system. Bi-weekly payment calculation and
assistance with payment distribution. Reconcile monthly bank
statements for CSA bank account.
* *Public Relations.* Support NESFP and World PEAS’s public
relations function including media (print, electronic, Internet)
announcements, and press releases; compile media alerts, maintain
media files. Assist in organizing special events to raise
awareness about NESFP and World PEAS’s work.
* *Ongoing Learning*. Keep abreast of developments in the fields of
local food and sustainable agriculture and contribute to efforts
to share insights and experiences across the organization.
*Qualifications and Experience*
1 – 2 years work experience minimum required; BS or BA degree
preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, particularly
Publisher, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and experience with internet and
web communications required. Ability to write clearly and effectively
required. Attention to detail, accuracy and excellent organizational
skills necessary, along with ability to follow through on assignments, a
sense of humor, and ability to meet deadlines while juggling numerous
projects. Ability to work as a member of a team, take initiative, work
independently and communicate effectively. A passion for making a
difference in sustainable agriculture, local food and food systems
issues a must. Experience with diverse populations, marketing,
communications, web-based applications, and public relations, and
experience with non-profit, small business, food and agriculture all a plus.
*Hours and Compensation*
Position is 3/4-time, 30 hrs/wk with possibility for full-time work by
taking on other projects. Hours are flexible, but primarily Mon-Fri
between 9am –5pm, nights on Thursdays until 7pm during CSA pickup.
Occasional weekend events such as farm tours and festivals are scheduled
a few times during the season.
Work is based at NESFP office in Lowell and Dracut, MA. Some work
involves off-site deliveries to Andover and East Boston. Involves
occasional travel and access to reliable transportation required.
Compensation: to be determined based on qualifications and experience;
Start date before May 1, 2008 preferred. Applications accepted until
