LAST MINUTE NOTICE.
Come TODAY (Sunday) to "meet" Adrian Benepe, the NYC Parks Commissioner, who will be in Morningside Park at 2 pm, commemorating the halting of Columbia University's gym construction 40 years ago BY SDS and student organizers.
Benepe is presiding over the privatization of NYC's parks, tearing down old trees, and Artificial turfing of huge swathes of our parks. He also was responsible, along with Mayor Bloomberg, for denying antiwar protesters the use of Central Park during the Republican Convention in 2004.
He lauds, apparently, the protesters of yesteryear (including me!) but fights tooth and nail against us today. Let's go and say "hi" to this guy.
This is the last part of Columbia 1968 40th Anniversary Event.
Note: synthetic turf reaches over 160 degrees in the summer (disparately impacting children who cannot leave the city in the summer), contains many toxic elements and compounds, and damages the environment. NY state and city legislative bills now before the Assembly and City Counci call for a Moratorium on the use of such synthetic turf. Commissioner Benepe still claims it is safe to use. see:
