This morning while jogging my usual route in South Burlington:
1 Carolina Wren-- singing near twin water tower/tanks on Harbor Ridge
1 Eastern Phoebe-- singing across from Harbor View at Pillsbury Manor
~25 Bohemian Waxwings and
2 Chipping Sparrows-- all seen along lower Pheasant Way
Now about the habitat loss: a strip of woods along the S. Burlington
rec path north of Overlook Dr. has recently been clear-cut. And I do
mean clear-cut-- right down to stumps and dirt. Why? This was good
songbird nesting habitat, I've seen many warbler species, plus
catbirds, etc. in those woods, both breeding and in migration.
Considering the piece-mealing of wetlands that's going on up the hill
(South Pointe at Spear, etc.) it is a disturbing trend. I'm going to
demand some answers from the city and I suggest that other concerned
citizens do likewise.
