It has indeed been a very hard winter on Barred Owls. I talked with
someone at the Wildlife Services department at VINS yesterday who
mentioned that they have received 40 Barred Owls this year (since Jan 1)
and most of them were too emaciated and starved to recover. This is up
markedly from last year--they only took in 44 Barred Owls in the entire
2007 calendar year.
