EWB-USA is seeking a volunteer who is a metallurgist and would be able
to provide technical support in evaluation of the behavior of metals
used in manufacturing children's metal toys (not paint).
Specifically, this member should have some experience with the
disintegration properties of metals in various conditions.
This request is on behalf of Sciencecorps and is not for a specific
community but is in support of state and federal actions regarding
heavy metals in children's products. At issue is the production of
imports made from scrap metal in Asia and Africa are increasing and
some products may pose high hazards to both children and adults due to
the metal mixture.
This project will look at the metallurgy associated with these imports
- will something disintegrate under various conditions based on its
composition? Which leads to the question of bioavailability - how much
will be absorbed and what is the target organ.
The time commitments are variable and will be determined in
conjunction with Sciencecorps once the number of available volunteers
are known. It may range from a few hours of research to review of
testing methodology and results.
