It was a nice afternoon yesterday at our place in Brandon. We had the sliding door that leads out to the deck open and a vase of cut red geraniums on a table in the house. At about 5:00 PM we noticed a female hummingbird buzzing around the living room.
We obviously didn't want to hurt the bird, and had a helluva time getting her out of the house again. The problem was that she kept close to the ceiling and was very reluctant to descend far enough to get under the door lintels that led outside. We didn't have a butterfly or landing net and spent about an hour waving an umbrella, an American flag, miscellaneous bed sheets, magazines, etc. before we finally herded her into the attached greenhouse off of the office. We opened the outside door from the greenhouse and left her. A half hour later she was gone.
Silly business.
