When I was doing the VBBA project I had hoped to find a nest of 2 species - the Brown Creeper - success thanks to heavy defoliation by the tent caterpillars - and a RT Hummingbird - NOT.
Well, today changed all that!!! While doing some point counts in the woods today, I heard a hummer. While following it with my binos to see if it was a m or f, she went to her nest!!! - just over my head. It's in a maple on a branch overhanging a logging road probably 30' in the air. At least it's visible enough to monitor whether she is on the nest and coming and going. What JOY!
I was also surprised to pick up a Towhee at that same spot as I usually think of them in scrubby, edge forest areas, not in the middle of the woods.
