Teacher completion fo the 2-day PTC training also earns the school a site license for PTC's Pro/Engineer design software. Pro/Engineer is a parametric 3d solid modeling CAD program, similar to SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor, that normally costs $100-$200 per seat for the educational version. By contrast, Google Sketchup is a highly simplified surface modeling design program. With some restrictions, schools with a site license are allowed to give the software to students to install on their computers at home. More information about parametric solid modeling is available online at http://www.mcadonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=177&Itemid=1 <http://www.mcadonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=177&Itemid=1> A 30-day trial version of the software is available for download from http://www.ptc.com <http://www.ptc.com>

"When we study music, we practice... because there is no other way to become a musician. Neither can we become engineers by just studying a textbook, because practical experience is needed to correlate the so-called theory with practice." Charles Franklin Kettering

Subject: Real World Design Challenge registration open
The Real World Design Challenge, mentioned last month on this list, is open for registration from teachers that may want to take advantage of this program. This is a program initiated from the office of the Lieutenant Governor's office. This program works with PTC, a software company that developed ProEngineer CAD software, and is sponsoring this challenge for students to solve some real world problems. Schools that take part get 200 licenses to ProEngineer software and support in perpetuity for the software.
To be involved in the program which kicks off with a press conference on July 16th, there are two teacher trainings offered this summer. One is on July 29-30 and the other is on Aug. 14-15. These are two day trainings and there is a minimal cost ($200.00) to schools to cover the instructor fee. To find out more details about the entire program, please refer to this web link;
The registration information is included in that link. We have a relatively short window to register folks, so don't delay if you are interested. Trainings are held at Champlain Valley UHS in July and S. Burlington in August.
We at the Dept. of Education realize that the timing for this registration is not ideal, but we encourage you to pass this along via summer contact information you may have to individuals that you believe would make the most of this opportunity for students.
