GEORGE WASHINGTON & THE REVOLUTION
AT MOUNT INDEPENDENCE
ORWELL, Vt. - On Saturday, October 4, Edward G. Lengel, author of the new book, This Glorious Struggle, will speak at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on George Washington while he was commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The program begins at 1:00 p.m. After the lecture will be a guided walk Lengel's book presents a selection of important papers written by Washington while he was commander in chief. Lengel will discuss Washington and his views on our region during the Revolution.
Lengel is associate editor of The Papers of George Washington, and a professor at the University of Virginia. The talk and book-signing will be followed by a guided walk on the Mount to further explore some of the places and issues Washington wrote about. This is the second annual J. Robert Maguire Lecture Series Program, sponsored by the Mount Independence Coalition, friends group for the historic site. Admission is $5.00 for adults and free for children under 15; it includes visiting the museum and access to the grounds and trails.
Mount Independence, one of Vermont's State-owned Historic Sites, is a National Historic Landmark and one of the best-preserved Revolutionary War sites in America. It is located near the end of Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersections of VT Routes 22A and 73 in Orwell. Call 802-948-2000 for more information.
