2009 CONFERENCE: MILWAUKEE, WI

   *** SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL ONLINE ***

   The 20th Annual National APSE Conference will take place from June
30 - July 2, 2009 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The APSE conference focuses
exclusively on facilitating integrated employment outcomes for people
with significant disabilities.  This year, Milwaukee will be the place
to share their knowledge and expertise on the latest and best
innovations related to employment!

   * Come network and celebrate with other APSE members from across
the country as our conference turns 20!
   * Join together to make APSE THE national membership organization
on employment!
   * WE CAN MAKE \"EMPLOYMENT FOR ALL\" A REALITY!

   Presentations are encouraged on a wide range of topics within EIGHT
THEME TRACKS related to improving and expanding integrated employment
opportunities, services, and outcomes. If you wish to submit a
conference proposal, please review the descriptions for the themes,
and submit a proposal according to the instructions provided. THE
SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 5, 2008.

PRESENTER REQUIREMENTS

   *  All presentations must support APSE’s mission to improve and
expand integrated employment opportunities, services, and outcomes for
persons experiencing disabilities.
   *  Presenters should have the ability to present their material in
ways that engages the audience and promote learning among the
attendees.
   *  As a membership organization focused on advocacy, APSE has
limited resources, and is unable to pay for travel, speaker or
registration fees for conference presenters. If your presentation is
accepted, you must register for the conference.
   *  All presenters must be APSE members at the time of the

   *  Presenters are responsible for bringing and/or covering the
costs of audiovisual equipment used during their sessions.

THEME TRACKS

   * \"MAKE THE BUSINESS CONNECTION!\"  MARKETING AND JOB DEVELOPMENT
STRATEGIES - Are businesses in your community calling you when they
have job openings?  Have you established on-going relationships within
the business community that result in a good "fit" between the
employer's needs and the choices and abilities of the individuals
supported by your agency?  If so, submit your proposal to this theme
track and share your innovative ideas for establishing relationships
with businesses as well as job development.
   * \"NOT JUST ANY JOB!\"  CUSTOMIZED AND SELF-EMPLOYMENT - Do you
know someone with a disability whose job was "customized" to match his
or her unique abilities, support needs, and interests?  Are you
self-employed?  APSE will give priority to individuals with
disabilities who tell their own stories of how they achieved their
dreams for employment.  Proposals in this track can also include the
discovery process, negotiating individualized jobs with employers,
resource ownership, and other innovative strategies.
   * \"WHERE IS THE MONEY?\" FUNDING EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES - Have you
gotten tired of hearing that there isn't any funding to support people
in community jobs?  Has your agency "braided and blended" dollars and
resources resulting in jobs of choice for individuals served by your
agency?  Or, have you used work incentives to support an individual's
dreams of self-employment and/or resource ownership? APSE is looking
for agencies and individuals to present innovative ideas for
overcoming the funding barrier to employment!  If so, submit your
proposals to this theme track!
   * \"WHAT CAN WE DO?\" CHALLENGING THE POLICY AND SYSTEM BARRIERS TO
EMPLOYMENT - Do you belong to an APSE chapter or organization that has
effectively worked with state and federal legislatures to advance
employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities?  Do you have an
"Employment First" policy in your state?  If so, APSE would like for
you to share your initiatives and ideas with other members!
Presentations in this theme track could also focus on innovative
strategies that have been used to overcome the typical barriers to
integrated community employment and transformed organizations to
increase their focus on community employment.
   * \"CREATE THE FUTURE!\" SCHOOL TO CAREER TRANSITION - Does your
school system place an emphasis on assisting students to explore their
dreams for the future?  Do students have opportunities to explore jobs
that can help them identify their career goals?  APSE is looking for
presentations that highlight strategies for facilitating integrated
employment outcomes post graduation.  This can include transition
planning, creating interagency partnerships, community-based
vocational experiences, supported employment programs in schools, and
working with families through the transition process.
   * \"LET'S GET ORGANIZED!\"  PROGRAM MANAGEMENT - Do you manage an
agency or program whose mission is to facilitate integrated employment
outcomes?   APSE is looking for presentations on topics such as
managing for quality, time management, finding and maintaining a
direct service workforce, staff development and advancement, ethics,
and effective management strategies.  Presentations that focus on
staff development and creating future leaders in employment will be
given priority in this theme track.
   * \"MAKE IT HAPPEN!\"  QUALITY DIRECT SERVICE DELIVERY TO
INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES - Have you had experience with effective
direct service strategies that meet the needs of individuals who are
often viewed as unemployable? APSE is particularly interested in
innovative strategies that can facilitate community employment
outcomes for who have unique support needs such as individuals with
autism, traumatic brain injury, persistent mental illness, or other
disabilities, as well as individuals from culturally diverse
backgrounds. Such strategies can also include but are not limited to
improving natural supports, choice and person-centered planning,
effective assessment, facilitating workplace supports, implementing
accommodations and assistive technology, positive behavior supports,
and other direct service strategies.
   * \"WE JUST WANT REGULAR LIVES!\" FAMILY AND CONSUMER ISSUES - Have
you developed innovative programs for individuals with disabilities
that empower them to take control of their careers and lives? APSE is
particularly interested in presentations that are for individuals and
family members versus those targeted to professionals. This can
include individual control of funding, benefits planning,
consumer-driven service strategies, consumer choice, self-advocacy,
and working with families.

   SESSION FORMAT AND LENGTH

   Sessions may use a variety of formats, including lecture with
questions and answers, panel discussion, and cracker barrel/open
discussion. APSE encourages sessions that actively engage
participants, including sessions that are facilitated open discussions
on important topics that do not necessarily include a formal
presentation. Presentation guidelines and tips will be provided with
session acceptance letters. Sessions can be either 60 or 90 minutes.

   SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

   To submit a presentation proposal, please complete the Call for
Presentations ON-LINE APPLICATION[41]. While submission of responses
on-line is preferred, individuals may also complete the Call for
Presentations response form[42], and submit the form by email or U.S.
mail. Information to be included in the response:

   * Session title, presenters, target audience, session format,
length, theme track.
   *  Abstract for conference program (150 word limit). Please
remember this is your marketing piece, and should be worded in a way
that generates interest in attending your session.
   *  A list of 3 to 5 learning objectives. Examples of wording for
learning objectives:

   * Increase knowledge of approaches to disclosure and accommodation
request.
   * Identify effective placement strategies for individuals with more
significant disabilities.
   * Enhance strategies for ensuring that placements reflect
individual interests and preferences.

   *  A session description (maximum 500 words) that expands the
information in the session description. This description may include
an outline of the information to be presented, ways the presentation
supports expansion of employment in integrated settings for persons
with disabilities, strategies for engaging the audience, and any other
information you feel may be useful in evaluating your proposal.
   * A resume, CV or a short biography – maximum 200 words, for each
presenter.

The Submission Deadline Is December 5, 2008.

   Proposals will be evaluated based on the quality of the proposed
presentation, and the presentations support for APSE’s mission and
values. The conference program committee will review all proposals and
notify lead presenters by February 1, 2009.
