Hi Jim and all!
American Coot is a very common species in northern CA. We lived near a
pond that had a coot who paired to breed in season -- they had a group
of fledges twice. I was sad when the fledges disappeared one by one
each year. Before they did, the fledges were large enough to literally
run across the surface of the water for about 30 feet before they
reached Mom and food! Thanks for the reminder about this sweet bird who
responded to my call by the name I gave her: "Momma!"! "she" always swam
toward me and squawked when I called. Darn cool...
