Wondering where the snow geese go, I decided to follow them? (No joke.)? What an inspiration, or perhaps folly!? Today, I found a thousand or more geese on Pea Island, North Carolina.? This is just north of Cape Hatteras, on the outer banks.?? What fabulous birding (thousands of shore birds and waterfowl)!!!!? Evidently, the 'peas', for which the island is named, is a great source of nutrition for the geese, so they overwinter here.?? I won't go on and on about non-VT birds, but I must say today was a white-bird extravaganza.? It was more than strange to see Snow Geese with not only snowy and great egrets, but also American White Pelicans and American Avocets. ? Tomorrow we are off for another white-out at Mattamuskeet NWR, where thousands of Tundra Swans overwinter. ? Now, if only I could find those clapper rails....
