I had always thought that DLps did not have filters, a NEC rep is telling me 
otherwise.

Yes DLP ‘s have filters.  TI is saying that you don’t need them in some of the 
projectors that use TI chip sets, but in a gym you going to get a lot of dust 
and dirt. I am not saying that you clean them once a month, but definitely 
once a year—depending on how many hours you use it to keep you projector 
running efficiently Thanks

Once a month or so (during the year) I go around and clean our LCD filters. I 
don't want to do that 29 feet up in the air though.

You should really research the no filter story. The biggest threat to any 
projector is heat. Clogged filters cause heat build up. You should change the 
filter every time you change the lamp
