This has been covered in "Einstein and Soviet Ideology", by the
anti-Communist Alexander Vucinich. i found it interesting that in
spite of Vucinich attempting a similar thesis to Pollock, one can read
into it a quite different interpretation: that physicists during this
period found -- through painful struggle -- ways to work around Stalin
and his ideological warriors. to me that is a much more interesting story.
