After hearing that cow farts -- particularly those made from the force-feeding "rendered" diets (i.e., ground up sick meat) to cows in industrial stockyards and slaughterhouses -- has been said to be a cause of global warming (not true, actually; cow and sheep BELCHES are a much greater methane emitter), I decided to investigate peoples' "contribution" as well.
Came upon a lovely website done by a few women, "Facts on Farts", which I heartily recommend:
According to this site, most farts do not contain methane, but mostly nitrogen and some other gases picked up along the way. I have to check further about Carbon Dioxide.
One note -- the claim is that a person farts 14 times per day on average -- around 1/2-liter per day. (Of course it depends on diets and lots of other factors, but this is an overall average.)
So that would be 84 billion farts per day worldwide, totally 3 billion liters of nitrogen and other gases. Breathe deep!

Next stop -- what's the volume of urine in the water on a hot day at Coney island, as hundreds of people must be peeing in the ocean at the same time, for any given minute?
Inquiring minds want to know!
