Tom Jiamachello and I birded in the Champlain Valley today - in the
delightful warmth. The bird of the day for me was one lone male Green-
Winged Teal at Dead Creek, in full breeding plumage. I've seen this
species in late March before, but never this early. The teal was with
a few Mallards, a few Canada Geese and several Hooded Merganser drakes.
There's not much open water yet at Dead Creek. There weren't any
eagles, gulls, ravens or crows feeding on defrosting fish; in fact,
we didn't see any fish near the surface of the ice at all.
