I think our comments between paragraphs is working, but we will definitely look at the print preview - it would be great for kids who get distracted easily by the comments inserted between paragraphs.
The revision thing won't work for this project - she wants real time discussions about the reading. For example, the mom is sick in the story. One kid writes "what is she sick from?" Another kid responds - "it says "oncology doctor, 'cancer'" in the paragraph above. That kind of thing.
I understand from doing some searching around on the web that others would like to see track changes built into Google Docs, but that it is probably a programmer's nightmare doing it on the web.

Would this work? You can change the print settings in Google Docs to show
comments or not. So if you want to see the document without comments for
readability, go to print preview and the documents are gone. If you want
to go back and see the comments, go back to edit mode.
As far as track changes, you can look at two revisions of the document and
it supposedly shows all the deletions and additions, etc. It's not as
elegant as track changes. I've also found it to somethings not show
revisions the way I would desire. (i.e. show a whole paragraph as
strikeout, when I only changed parts of it).
