Actually we rarely have problems. The most difficult are the first scans at 2yrs old. Stickers are great bribery also. The problems I've had with movies which I use for all exams but this one is that they want to move their heads to watch. Try to avoid nap time as kids get grouchy when their tired. The biggest problem I have once you get them to lay down and not cry is keeping them awake which as you know is crucial to avoid false positive exams. The sickle cell kids get so many shots and blood draws that its important to let them know that the lab is a "no ouch zone" Allow extra time especially for the younger ones sometimes you have to pretend to scan mom, brothers, sisters and even let them try. Also doing the exam sitting in the parents lap helps or having the parent lay on the bed with them.
If I can help at all feel free to call. We do about 3-4 a day.

Subject: First time testing Children...HELP![Scanned]
We have become very good at taking care of the elderly in our laboratories. In fact, it's sometimes so peaceful and quite that our patients will fall asleep during our exams.
I have a feeling that this is about to change...
We are going to be performing transcranial Doppler on kids with Sickle Cell disease.
Does anyone have an recommendations for how to work with these (or any) kids?
Do you use something to distract them...TV? Nintendo?
What works for those of you who do this?
