This afternoon about 1:30 I received a phone call from a former Game Warden
who had been out fishing with his son on Lake Bomoseen. He indicated he
had seen a small group of gull-like birds with black heads rising and then
dropping down to the water and rising up again.....From the description and
behavior I suggested Bonaparte Gulls but with the reservation that I had
never seen them on Lake Bomoseen. About an hour later I had the opportunity
to make a hurried trip to the lake to see for myself, but I came back empty
handed except for an osprey and a common loon! I could not check the
whole lake as I had a commitment at 3:30. On arriving back there was a message
on my answering machine with a report from the gentleman, that the birds
in question were "definitely "Little Gulls". I do believe he had access to
a bird guide.
I pass this on for the interest of any birder in the area and for the need
to document the sighting.
The birds were reported originally between Neshobe Island and the fishing
access.
