Google Apps maintains a revision history (tools->revision history). What
might work in this situation is to have kids read the original piece in
the revision history list to gain a sense of the piece, and then read
later revisions by other students. There's also the option to compare
different revisions to one another. But there's a danger of great
confusion when you have a number of kids doing this type of work with
one piece, even if it's limited to 4 students. Another option is to go
back to the track changes in Word, and have kids take turns adding
comments. Then the teacher could present this on a display, and
determine with the group which comments or changes are viable.

She had hoped to put four kids in a group and simultaneously go through and insert comments. She would like it to look like track changes, which I don't think is available in Google Apps. What happens with the comments kids are putting in is that they break up the reading, so if one kid is reading faster than another, there are comments that break up the reading for the slower readers, so the paragraphs don't flow.
