The following worked for me on an XP SP3 running ie7:
1.boot in safe mode
2.remove nod32 (via 'all programs')
3.reinstall nod32 (4.0.437.0 was the version I had; thunderbird is not
The definitions updated to today.
No problems browsing (FF); rebooted; browsed more; still no problem.
