Late this afternoon I visited the Colchester-South Hero Causeway again, this time from the Allen Point end. The large flock of Scaup that typically resides here for the winter has returned. I estimate that there are at least 3000 Scaup on the lake side of the Causeway in total, most of which can be best seen from the "cut". However, there is a fairly large separate flock of Scaup that can be seen quite well from the parking lot. Both Greaters and Lessers were present with Greaters predominant. However, all of the birds were swimming well offshore and in the fading light it was impossible to distinguish between Greaters and Lessers with certainty. Also, I could not pick out any other duck species mixed in with the Scaup, but in better light-who knows?
To add to the fun, there was a Common Loon diving on the Bay side of the Causeway.
