I have been using a freeware backup program called SyncBack (clever name -
eh?) .. http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html I have a
dedicated 1 TB machine, plus some external HD's. Home directories and all
other critical folders wind up here. It helps me sleep at night.
I looked into the idea of offsite storage. We are in a pretty tight budget
year, so that luxury won't come about.
For server backup, be sure to backup the system state (although I have never
rebuilt a server using it).

Subject: Re: Windows server backup?
We are using BE all around on both Windows and Netware. We have agents on
Windows Netware and Linux. The bulk of the backup is running on Windows
2008 with v12.5. With educational pricing it is very favorable. We buy
the licenses from Schoolworld. We are also running the SQL agent and in
some cases its overkill as they provide a backup as well but its never a bad
thing to have a plan B.

Hello you Windows server mavens out there. We have recently acquired two
Windows 2008 servers (which I have only the foggiest notion of how to
operate). One server is running our library system and the other, at this
point, is just doing file services. Right now, I'm backing them up with a
trial version of Backup Exec, but I'm wondering if there are other, cheaper,
options. (Not cheaper than the trial version - you can't beat that for
pricing.) Is the built-in Windows backup acceptable? (I've heard that the
2008 version is actually worse than the 2003 server backup: MS took some
stuff out of it.) What other choices are there? Any experience with
Ultrabac? (not cheap) or Acronis? (not cheap either and makes me nervous
that it started life as a home computer backup system).
We're backing up to external disk. The library server is running SQL, but
it can be shut down for the backup.
Suggestions? Warnings? Acrimonious name calling? :-)
