I agree with the drinking straw—works great. Then use proper surgical marker (ask your O.R.) so the marks can withstand the skin prep. I think those have gentian violet, a dye that is very durable.

I'm sure others will answer similarly, but I have found that marking
pens are a waste of $$. I have always used either the tip of a ball
point pen (with retractable writing point) or coffee stir straw. As
I follow the vein down, align the pen/straw in the center of the
transverse transducer and simply apply pressure to the skin for a
second. After you wipe away the gel, the pressure leaves pink
circles on the skin that you can "connect". The spots will remain for
at least 10-15 min so time is not an issue. Try It on the inside of
your forearm! Cost of 1000 stir sticks (7.00). Cost of retractable
pen (.79cents).
