Even though this is officially outside our list's territory, I thought
some of you might like to know that a Northern Hawk Owl has been seen
regularly in Champlain, NY -- a shorter drive for some of us than NEK!
First, directions: From Route 11 in Champlain, turn north on Rout
276, then left on Prospect St, just north of the school. I would
recommend pulling onto Gamlaw Rd, less than a half mile on the right.
Park on Gamlaw and walk both directions on Prospect St and look for
the owl. It was originally reported on the 3rd utility pole west of
Gamlaw, but it moves around a bit.
I drove over yesterday (Friday Jan 22). When I got there at about
3:00 pm, no owl was in sight. I spoke to a resident of one of the
houses in the area, and he said the owl is most reliable in the
morning, he has been seeing it since November, and he got some
pictures of it from 6 feet away.
I then walked down the road and spotted it pretty far back in the
woodlot south of Prospect St. It then flew east, toward Rt 276, and
landed in the lone tree in the middle of the field. As I walked
closer, it flew to the group of trees at the top of the hill, just
north of the school. I walked up the hill (staying on the road) and
got very good looks at it in full sun. Very nice! He then flew west,
deep into the original woodlot, where I could no longer see it. So,
if you go, be sure to check all around the area and not just along the
spend a little time, because he seems to move around a lot.
