running VISTA or Windows 7
       To: [log in to unmask]

Our small GIS lab runs Windows XP, but current GIS course is over
subscribed and a few students are working on their personal laptops
which are running VISTA. Unlike Windows XP, mapping to a networked drive
from within ArcCatalog on a VISTA machine is not a straight forward
exercise, as this long ongoing discussion on the ESRI site highlights
(http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=1727&t=266610).

Thanks to folks in our IT Help Dept a procedure has been worked out to
make mapped networked drives visible in ArcCatalog on VISTA and Windows
7 computers.

*
Windows Vista & Windows 7**
*

    1. Click on the round Vista or Windows 7 button.
    2. *RIGHT *click on *Computer*.
    3. Select *Map network drive* (using the left mouse button)
    4. Choose a drive letter (any available drive is fine)
    5. In the space provided /to the left of/ the *Browse *button type:
       *(path to networked drive)*
    6. Make sure there is a check mark in the box labeled "Reconnect at
       logon".
    7. Entering your credentials
          1. *VISTA*
                1. Click on the link labeled, "Connect using a different
                   name".
                2. In the login window that opens type: "userid"
                3. Enter your network password
                4. Click on *OK*
                5. Back in the Map network drive window, click on *Finish*
          2. *Windows 7*
                1. Click in the check box labeled, "Connect using
                   different credentials"
                2. Click on *Finish*
                3. In the login window that opens type: "userid"
                4. Enter your network password
                5. Click on *OK*
    8. The "mapped drive" window will open.* *You can leave it open or
       close it.*
       *
    9. You can now open ArcCatalog and drive M (or whatever letter you
picked) will be available from within the application.
   10. *NOTE*: When you boot your computer, you will see a bubble in the
lower right corner that tells you the drive could not be
reconnected. Click on the bubble and then click to open the drive
(M:). You will be prompted again to enter your credentials.
