Ok without writing a book I will try and answer a few of your questions.
Hawk Owl #1 - The bird is in the town of North Derby. Take I-91 north to exit 28. Take rte 105 / 5 south towards Newport. It's either your 5th or 6th right (Sias Ave) Turn north here. Continue North as the road turns into Darling Hill Rd. After a mile or so you come to a fork in the road where North Derby Rd is straight ahead and Darling Hill hangs a right. Stay straight and drive north along North Derby Rd. Continue keeping your eyes out for a VT fish & wildlife game access sign. Start looking for the Owl through here. Driving a little further you will notice a two car garage and a red barn. It's this area that the Hawk Owl is hanging out in. Just scan the tree line on either side of the road and you should be able to find the bird. Also in the area is a Rough-legged Hawk and a few Northern Shrikes.
Hawk Owl #2 - This bird is in the small town of Ferdinand which is right outside of Island Pond. To get to this bird again take I-91 north to exit 23. From here take Rte 5 north to rte 114. Take Rte 114 north. After a while (maybe 30 min+) Rte 105 joins up with 114 as you get ready to enter Island Pond. Now stay on Rte 105 through Island Pond and start looking for the pathetic looking Airport. Once you pass the Airport drive just about 3 miles to where there's a snowmobile crossing, train tracks and a bog on your right. Look all over here because this is where the Hawk Owl hang's out.
Boreal Species - Just a little further north from where the Hawk Owl is you will see a wildlife sign on your right next to a dirt rd. This is South American Pond Rd which is also know as "Moose Bog". There is a couple trails not far down the dirt rd to the right where it's not uncommon to find boreal species. I visit here every spring and find Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee & White-winged Crossbills.
Hope this info helps. This area of VT is like my backyard and spend a lot of time camping and birding the area. Good luck!
