I located an adult female Black-backed Woodpecker this morning foraging in
dead trees in a conifer bog in Berkshire (basically on the Canadian border),
after observing several dead spruce with recently flaked bark, and then
listening for the woodpecker's tapping. Other species observed:
Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches
American Crow
Common Raven
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Blue Jay
Black-capped Chickadee
Wild Turkey
Ruffed Grouse
Hairy Woodpecker
House Finch (in nearby hardwoods)
