Someone kindly gave this answer:

Articles in MEDLINE must be completely indexed with MeSH headings and
epubs, head of print are not. If you apply the MEDLINE subset limit,
     it will eliminate them.

That is super, and something I did not know. Thank you! It does wipe out things that are in print but not yet indexed, but at least it is a work around.

I am still curious about the options for the PST field: are articles indexed as "epublish"[PST] ever included in the MEDLINE subset? I thought I had a perfect example, but it only confuses me.

The New England Journal of Medicine, 2010 February 25, has a Perspective article by HJ Aaron called 'Forging Ahead - Embracing the "Reconciliation" Option for Reform' on page e23. I have very carefully flipped through my print copy of that issue, and there is no page e23. But here is part of the MEDLINE view of the indexing on that article:

EDAT- 2010/02/12 06:00
MHDA- 2010/03/10 06:00
CRDT- 2010/02/12 06:00
PHST- 2010/02/10 [aheadofprint]
AID - NEJMp1001616 [pii]
AID - 10.1056/NEJMp1001616 [doi]
PST - ppublish
SO - N Engl J Med. 2010 Feb 25;362(8):e23. Epub 2010 Feb 10.

I would have expected the PST to be epublish which NLM defines as "electronically published only, never published in print"

Is the epublish PST value only used for publications outside of the MEDLINE subset? Does Henry Aaron's article get printed in some versions of the journal?

I welcome any clarification for my confusion.

Tori (but replying to MEDLIB-L) -

I will be interested in the NLM responses as I do not see a way to do
this. There is a field in Medline called Publication Status: PST which
can have one of three values:

ppublish - published in print (default value)
epublish - electronically published only, never published in print
aheadofprint - electronically published, but followed by print

(see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/mms/medlineelements.html#pst)

However, this field is not searchable, which I presume really means
there is no index for this field that is directly searchable. It appears
from a single search I just did on a title that was an E-Pub for
sometime and finally appeared in print, that the value for this field
changes from aheadofprint to ppublish when the print version is indexed.

Having that field searchable would seem to be the best solution
(assuming there is currently no way to do this) as you could eliminate
both articles that will never be in print and those that are not yet in
print.

PS - Maybe if Linda Milgrom is still reading MEDLIB-L she'll reply ;-)

Does anyone know how to do this? I would greatly appreciate any
help....
