Orange East SU has a stand-alone SpEdDoc server running Windows 2003
(SP2), terminal services and Filemaker 10. Our users remote into it
from both windows machines and Macs (Remote Desktop Connection). Over
the years, we have had the normal whack-a-mole problems with printing
but several weeks ago we started getting regular, semi-consistent
reports of printing problems with the Macs. Basically, the reports
all say the same thing: 'My printer is just gone. It has been there
for years, and now it is gone.'
However, since the OESU tech consultant position is only funded for
2.5 days a week, sometimes I can't return their call for a couple of
days. When I do, the majority say 'oh - it came back yesterday.' I
have been unable to discern a pattern in the failures. It happens to
brand new machines and old ones, beta RDC clients as well as the 2.0.1
release, wired and wireless connected. Even happens to one of two
identical machines attached to the same wireless while the other is
fine - but two days later the situation reverses. All the clients I
have actually examined have local printing turned on in the RDS
preferences and set to the desired printer. A full shut down and
reboot restored one while I watched but I haven't had an opportunity
Any suggestions for cause or cure? Anyone else noticing this behavior?
My first thought was since the client machines were so diverse, it
must have been some change/update to the server. But I am at a loss
for an explanation.
