Bard College Debate Coach:
Bard College is a top-50 private liberal arts institution located in
the Hudson Valley region of New York State. The debate coach will
oversee all administrative/logistical and coaching duties for the
forensics team, which consists primarily of a British
Parliamentary/Worlds team and a Mock Trial team.
Administrative/logistical duties involve registering teams for
tournaments, booking transportation and accommodations, managing the
debate team budget, planning debate team meetings and practice
debates, and arranging space on campus for public debate events.
Coaching duties involve recruiting new members to the team, holding
weekly or biweekly meetings and practice debates, advising student
research and tournament preparation, and attending 4-6 regional (and
occasional national) tournaments per semester to oversee the team and
fulfill judging requirements. The coach will also work with the debate
team to develop approximately 2-3 public programs for the Student
Debate Union on campus each term. There may be opportunities to do
additional coaching at Bard’s sister school, Bard College at Simon’s
Rock, in Great Barrington, MA. S/he will report to Jonathan Becker,
Associate Dean of the College.
All Applicants should be organized and self-motivated, should have a
B.A. degree or equivalent, a valid drivers license, and a love for
debate! Experience coaching college debate would be preferable but not
a requirement.
This position is a part-time position and could be ideal for someone
living in/around the New York City metro area!
