Forgetting that the water level on the Connecticut River at Herrick's Cove
is controlled, I went down this morning anticipating to find some early
shorebird migrants. The high water level dictated otherwise!
However, it was a glorious morning and the birding was interesting, in
particular the Louisiana Waterthrush in the Red Pine/White Pine plantation to
the north of the picnic area. The bird was only 15 feet from me and was
well seen. My assumption, as indicated below, is that it is in migration.
Indian Pipe poking their heads out of the pine litter!
Location: Herrick's Cove IBA
Observation date: 7/15/10
Notes: American Robin, [NB], nest building! Louisiana Waterthrush
observed from about 15 feet completely out or breeding habitat, approximately
30 yards from Connecticut River in Red Pine/White Pine area. Inference is
that it is already on its southern migration. Northern Waterthrush calling
from tranquil, sheltered and vegetated inlet. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
responded to "pishing" intended to draw out a possible Philadelphia Vireo!
