What got me is it was found in a basement. Now if that basement is open to the outside in a certain way, maybe the owl would roost there. That is why I feel perhaps it was brought there.

Paul A. Johnsgsrd's North American Owls states that screech owls will eat pigeons. Since the deceased bird showed no signs of trauma one wonders if poison could have come into play. Or perhaps a collision.
