Very interesting study but as it states it may not hold true for other species.
One wonders then about feeding hummers in the summer. Do they then spend time defending "their" feeders?
Most of the aggression I observed this past season was between immature birds. The adult male would sit and occasionally defend the feeder. However I did see the birds feeding on the nearby touch-me-not flowers as often as not.
