The Males have the same bold facial pattern as the females, it's just that
it is tinged purple. So once you learn to recognize it on the females you
can apply it to the males too.

Hi, personally, I find the females to be much easier than the males to ID
for those just starting out. The bold facial pattern is much more noticeable
in females than males. Once you get good with them focus on the males and
they will get easier too. I did see 1 male purple finch in your area a
couple of weeks ago so don't be too quick to dismiss your sightings. Kevin
(not Marie).
